What is power? (FINAL EXAM)

What is Power?

I think that power is defined on what you personally believe. I believe that power is when someone has the upper hand, someone that has the strongest will that influences everyone that this person has power over. I find that power is sometimes even taken advantage of as we have studied in class many times. There are also different types of powers, like economic power, military/governmental power, and also there is self power. All three are completely different from one another, and all can be dangerous.

Economic power is a type of power that controls all of the money. A good example of a country that has an excellent economy is Taiwan. When the Chinese invaded Taiwan, the Taiwanese knew that they couldn’t hold off the Chinese’s great army, but they had a lot of money. They gave money to many African countries and gained support from the USA (United States of America) and the UN (United Nations). China was then scared to invade Taiwan completely. This shows that Economic power can be overpowering for those that are about to face such things. Money has its ways of saving people’s lives. Also money is what started the push and pull factors. Back in the Industrial Revolution, people that were living in England or anywhere in Europe during their times of farming, people were either pulled into going to the city to find a new life that includes money, or they are pushed away from their homes for reasons such as unemployment. This shows what economical power can do to people that are living at lower standards and how hard it is to endure it. This now leads me to how military/governmental power is defined and what I have learned about it.

Military and Governmental power is somewhat the same thing. This year in humanities, we learned of so many leaders that had an abundance of power. A good example of this is Joseph Stalin. He was a communist leader in the time of the Russian Revolution. He had control over both the military and the governmental power. Stalin had done many crimes during his time in power such as replacing the Russian Empire with the Soviet Union. This is a good example of military and governmental power because he had the most influence on everyone in Russia. He made everyone work extremely hard and then changes the rules secretly along the way. Also Adolf Hitler was a man that had control on the military of Germany and also he was high prized in the government. He had brought Germany back up and created their economy again. But then he took a wrong turn and ended up fueling and committing the holocaust. Military and Governmental power are the worst and the most influential powers out there, but the most important power, is self-power.

Self-power is when you have control over what you are doing. If you have self-power then you have a strong will, and a strong will is important for making the right decisions. An example I have of self-power, was the book that I read for the lit circles at the end of the year, The Hunger Games. In this book the main character, Katniss, had a very strong will, and a lot of confidence. Katniss knew what she had to do to keep herself and her family alive since they were on the brink of starvation. Her district, district 12, was the poorest district out there. When Katniss takes her sisters place in the Hunger Games, she knows what she is doing. She is risking her life to save her sisters. This shows that self-power she was a very strong part of her that had a very powerful weight on her. Throughout the book, she showed that she can survive by herself, which she is strong enough to keep on living even during the worst conditions. Self-power is what keeps everyone alive today, and keeps people from doing the stupidest things.

As you can see, all the powers are different but all of them we value. Economic power can help you greatly when in dire need. All the money can gain you support in order to help fight a war or fight starvation. Military and Governmental power can give your country support and some hope when under an invasion or an attack. Last, self-power can help you make the right decisions for the present, and the future. Power depends on how you define it, but to me power is everywhere, sometimes in the right places, and sometimes in the wrong places.

PoP... Did it really help? :O

In the Population Project, I learned how to properly make a data analysis. This will help for the future when we are asked to analyze our data especially in our later years of high school. Also in college I find that this will be really useful. Another thing I learned from PoP was the in-text citations and how to use them properly. This will always be useful in my educational career because for the rest of my life in college and in high school I will be writing research papers. The last thing I really learned from the Population Project is how to organize my time properly. I think that it has taught everyone that you need to work really hard and not procrastinate it till later and I’m sure the people that did, learned a good lesson. I did too, but I had organized by time and didn’t have a problem with finishing the work that was set out for me. As I had said, Population Project has helped me for the future to come!

Net Effect of Globalization. Good or bad?

I think that Globalization has an overall positive and negative effect on the world. The ways in which it had a positive effect was that it gives opportunities to poorer countries like India, to allow others to have jobs and not be starving and homeless. Also globalization has allowed the adaptation of different cultures and religions like never before. One more thing is that westernization has evolved so greatly, and globalization has introduced us to new types of technology that were never even to be thought of.

Globalization may have had many positive effects, but also there are so many negative things that have happened because of it. One of the biggest problems with globalization is all the losses of jobs in countries like the United States. Also even though other countries like India are getting these jobs, the wages for the poor are extremely low and the impoverished people still have disastrous living conditions. Now that people are so poor and aren’t be treated to the equal, drug use has become more popular over the years. Also, the diversity in people’s cultures is vanishing and they are becoming American and changing their cultures and their lifestyles.

Therefore, I think that Globalization has had an overall negative effect on our Earth.

Technology vs. Socializing

The main visual elements of this cartoon are the size of the family and how their faces are either stretched or very round. Also the scene that is located in is a visual element that stands out. The issue of this cartoon is technology shouldn’t be where everyone is. No one should be spending their life with technology doing everything in life with it. I find that the cartoonist is thinking that technology is taking over everyone’s lives, especially our generation. This is because the parents are asking about their child’s day and they then are obliged to go and check his blog to know how their son’s day was. That’s just crazy!

This picture is ironic because they would have first suggested going to the blog instead of actually socializing and a life that is full of going on computers for everything and not having a social life is quite ironic. This cartoon relates to our study of technology in the future because the future probably holds so many processes that account for having a massive amount of technology. I think this means that everyone in the future will have to have a computer. I think that the cartoonist should have shown a little more emotion in the people’s faces to see more of what they (him really) thought about it. It would have made it more easier to see what his opinion is then.

What is technology to me?

Technology to me is the development of machinery from the years back. Technology helps us function in everyday life, perhaps not for the better every time. Technology helps us do things we couldn’t do alone. I think that the most important technologies today are; the air conditioner, the computer, the light bulb, the telephone, and the camera. The air conditioner because it can keep us cool in the ferociously hot weather, the computer because it has so many functions within itself, the light bulb because it helps us see in the dark, the telephone because it brings us into contact with everyone at any time, and the camera because we can then capture moments. The five least important technologies to me are; the T.V., the car, the elevator (in some senses), the floppy disk, and the computer. The T.V. because we see things that are happening, but it just makes us that much lazier, the car because we might as well bike everywhere and get some exercise, the elevator, TAKE THE STAIRS! The floppy disk, it’s bigger and less space than a pen drive, and the computer as I said was one of the most important as well, but the computer also does all our functions and doesn’t let us do any of them on our own. I think that the amount of technology we use in AES is enough but we shouldn’t exceed where we are at.

Stupid technology?

“Do you know what a Luddite is? That’s a person who doesn’t like newfangled contraptions. Contraptions like nuclear submarines armed with Poseidon missiles that have H-bombs in their warheads, and like computers that cheat you out of becoming. Bill Gates says, “Wait till you can see what your computer can become.” But it’s you who should be doing the becoming. What you can become is the miracle you were born to work—not the damn fool computer.”

- Kurt Vonnegut

I do agree with Mr. Vonnegut’s opinion but I do not at the same time. I think that technology is prolonging our becoming something or someone in the world but I think that the technology helps get there. Maybe get us there slower, but it does improve our abilities and knowledge. Like in “The Euphio Question.” The technology ruined the lives of many with making everyone happy and whenever they came out of there daze, they were starving and cold. Technology I believe can destroy you if you have too much of it, just like anything can. But technology is helping us grow into the future because it helps us process things faster and that is the upside to it. The world just has to be careful with how much we use it and hopefully we won’t go into crazy inventions making everyone happy and then absolutely miserable. So I do agree, but I don’t at the same time.
